Initially inspired by the realism and color theories taught by Watercolorist Robert Long, I painted people, pets and places that had meaning to me and sold their prints prolifically for several years after starting at the age of 30. Once I felt deserving of the luxury of discovering more techniques, I took a series of classes with Val Persoon, my mentor, from Tacoma, who taught me 36 watercolor techniques in 6 months. It was only after painting and selling works reflecting her style for several more years that I had a desire to invent a look of my own.
My personal challenge became to invent a version of a flower that would interest me … that might include their movement. This resulted in my creating self-discovered techniques using a new medium, Fluid Acrylic, on both paper and canvas. Imagining flowers moving made me see them dancing, and when I thought of them dancing, I imagined them being accompanied by music…so it made perfect sense, to me, to put music notes in with my dancing flowers.
I paint a lot of tulips because I’m Dutch. My mother is from The Netherlands and I speak Dutch fluently. I have been there many times to visit family members. Also, because I play and teach the flute, I incorporate it and other instruments into my pieces. A PLU graduate in 1991, in English Literature… I am also a writer/poet. I self-published a book called Love Blooms in 1997. I spend my days as an elementary special education teacher’s assistant. I enjoy teaching on some evenings. My newest class option is a Creativity Clinic with Fluid Acrylics that I do for large and small groups. My last painting order was an image that combined a violin and the Eiffel Tower into one image, with the name of the person it was for, hidden in it. I also enjoy doing splash sketch portraits of pets and people.
In dutch, “Van” means from. I am very pleased with my recent decision to begin signing my work, as of April 2014, as, “Van Grace.” I am very happy that my name will now reflect my heritage because it is one that I am very connected to, and am proud.
